Intake Manifold Plenum | FSAE

Researched and designed an intake plenum for the 2016 competition internal combustion car. This process looked at the previous iteration of the design and improved each feature. This included modeling each iteration of the full plenum in SolidWorks, conducting flow and stress analysis using Ansys and SolidWorks, and manufacturing the plenum using 3D Printed Nylon with the team.

The design process began with researching the volumetric flow needed for the car, in which a master equation was derived. This allowed us to know what other specifications were needed, including volume and choke flow needed based on our 600cc engine. The design of the pictured plenum began with these variables being used, with a conical inner inlet and outlet for air, allowing for an 13% increase in efficiency at peak 8300 RPM for the air intake.
